Reinstatement of Akash Anand as BSP National Coordinator: Post Lok Sabha Elections Defeat

Lucknow: Akash Anand, nephew of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, has been reappointed as the party’s national coordinator following the recent defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.

Context

On May 7, Mayawati removed the 28-year-old Akash Anand from the role, stating he needed to gain more “maturity” before assuming such responsibilities. However, she confirmed that Akash Anand’s father, Anand Kumar, would retain his position within the party.

Decision and Review Meeting

The decision to reinstate Akash Anand was made during a review meeting addressing the party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The BSP failed to win any seats, marking the worst result in its history. This contrasts sharply with the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when the BSP secured 10 out of 80 parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, in alliance with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP).

The review meeting was chaired by Mayawati and attended by Akash Anand, along with BSP leaders, party coordinators, and district unit presidents from Uttar Pradesh.

Previous Appointment

Previously, on December 10 of last year, Mayawati had named Akash Anand, who holds an MBA from London, as her successor and appointed him as the party’s national coordinator.
