Peter Gregory Onwubuasi Obi CON (born 19 July 1961) is a Nigerian businessman politician and philanthropist, who served as governor of Anambra from March to November 2006, February to May 2007, and June 2007 to March 2014. In May 2022, he became the Labour Party candidate for President of Nigeria in the 2023 presidential election, after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Early life and education
Obi was born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria, into a devout Christian family. He attended Christ the King College, Onitsha, where he completed his secondary school education. He was admitted to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1980 and graduated with a B.A. (Hons) in Philosophy in 1984.
Business career
After graduating from university, Obi worked as a banker for several years. He held leadership positions in some private establishments, including Next International Nigeria Ltd, Chairman and Director of Guardian Express Mortgage Bank Ltd, Guardian Express Bank Plc, Future View Securities Ltd, Paymaster Nigeria Ltd, Chams Nigeria Ltd, Data Corp Ltd and Card Centre Ltd. He was the youngest chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc.
Political career
Obi entered politics in 2003 when he was elected as the governor of Anambra State. He was re-elected in 2007 and served as governor until 2014. During his time as governor, Obi made significant progress in improving the state’s economy and infrastructure. He also introduced a number of reforms, including the electronic payment of salaries and pensions, the introduction of a new revenue generation system, and the establishment of the Anambra State Security Trust Fund.
Personal life
Obi is married to Margaret Obi and they have four children. He is a devout Christian and a member of the Anglican Church.
